I have a baby but no mom friends — what can I do?
A gentle first-week plan for parents starting with no local mom friends, without needing an existing group or a confident introduction.
A place to start
You do not need a ready-made group to begin. Choose one place you can return to, make one small introduction and invite one person to something specific. Having no mom friends now says nothing about your ability to make them; you are starting a network, not catching up with everyone else.

Start without comparing your life to other families
Photos of busy parent groups rarely show the awkward first meetings or lonely days behind them. You may be the first in your old friendship group to have a baby, or have no local contacts at all. Keep friendships with people without children too. Parent friends can meet a particular need, but they do not have to become your entire social life.
Give yourself one manageable task this week
Find a library baby session, community centre or parent group within a realistic journey. Check the time and whether booking is needed. Your first task can simply be going once and asking the organiser how the session works. If a group feels overwhelming, ask about a smaller session or choose a regular walk instead.
Turn one conversation into a small next step
Ask a parent whether they come often or know another baby-friendly place. If chatting feels comfortable, suggest meeting at the same session next week or having a short coffee afterwards. A clear invitation is easier to answer than “We should meet sometime.” Exchange contact details only if you both want to, and keep early meetings public.
Leave room for a slow start
Not every conversation becomes friendship, and delayed replies often reflect tiredness rather than rejection. Try another session or person if your first attempt goes nowhere. If you have been feeling isolated for a long time, tell someone you trust; you do not have to solve it alone. Aim for one familiar face before a whole circle of friends.
An invitation you can adapt
“Hi, I’m new to meeting other parents and don’t have local mom friends yet. Would anyone like a short coffee after the library baby session next week? Babies and feeding breaks welcome.”
Meeting parents with Ciruna
You do not need an existing circle to post a public meetup on Ciruna. A simple walk or coffee gives nearby parents something concrete to join. You can meet mums, dads and other parents; friendship does not require identical family circumstances.
