How to find playdate buddies for your toddler

Find toddler playmates, plan a short public playdate and set realistic expectations about sharing and playing together.

A place to start

Look for families who can meet nearby at a similar time, then try a short playdate in a public, age-appropriate place. Toddlers may play alongside each other rather than together. The first goal is a comfortable visit, not instant friendship or perfect sharing.

Look for a compatible place and pace

A library toddler session, enclosed playground or community activity can offer a natural starting point. Check the age guidance, access and any booking requirements. Children do not have to be exactly the same age, but equipment and activities should suit both. Keep your first visit short enough to leave before everyone is exhausted.

Expect playing alongside, not always together

Young toddlers may watch each other or play separately with similar toys. That does not mean the playdate failed. Offer space and simple activities without forcing children to share or become friends. Ask the other parent how they would like to handle disagreements, and stay close enough to help.

Check the practical details first

Agree where to meet and who is coming. Each adult should supervise their own child unless you explicitly agree otherwise. If you bring snacks, ask about allergies and food sharing first. Avoid posting children's full names, dates of birth or home addresses in an open invitation.

Repeat what felt manageable

After the visit, ask whether the other family would enjoy another short meetup. Keep what worked and adjust what did not: a quieter venue, earlier time or fewer children. A tantrum or shy afternoon is not a verdict on either child. If someone is unwell, postpone and tell the other family.

An invitation you can adapt

“Would another family like a short toddler playdate at the library playground this week? We can keep it relaxed and finish early if the children have had enough.”
